Cottonland

Canada, 2005, (52 min), Beta SP
Directed by: Nance Ackerman

How does an entire community fall into despair? When the last of Cape Breton’s once-thriving coal mines shut down in the late 1990s, the population of Glace Bay faced chronic unemployment. Cottonland explores how easy it is for social dependency on the state to escalate further into personal substance dependency.

Director Nance Ackerman collaborated with recovering OxyConton addict Ed Buchanan in this fearless documentary, which ultimately affirms the power of possibility. Heartstring Productions was commissioned by the NFB to do the original soundtrack, writing and performing a majority of the score. Media clips to come.
